The pretty, aging river-port town of Alcácer do Sal is known for the storks that nest atop its church towers, but it was the pigeons and plants that caught my eye.
On the street connecting the market plaza and the church, hundreds of pigeons roost in tall pine trees and on the rooftops. The walls of the old whitewashed buildings that line the narrow street are home to vertically growing plants.
These must share space with the pigeons, who fill them with their falling feathers.
