This Sunday: last chance to see our art in a Berlin park

For a few more days, deep in Berlin’s Neukölln district, you can find an entire exhibition full of art about urban gardens and plants. And the gallery is in an urban oasis, a sunken garden with fountains, lawns and flowers.

Do stop by Körnerpark if you are in town and see Urban Plant Research exhibiting alongside other botanically-inclined artists. The closing reception at 5pm on Sunday, October 11, will include a tour guided by the curator and several of the artists. We sadly cannot be there in person and hope you will represent us if you are in Berlin!

Forschungs-Spaziergänge am See, um den Bahnhof Lichtenberg, in Parks und in einem Friedhof. Unsere Woche als Künstlerinnen in Residenz in Lichtenberg Studios war unglaublich voll und ging zu schnell zu Ende. Am Freitag, ein paar Tage vor der Abreise, haben wir zu einer Kunstveranstaltung und Prämiere eines Kurzfilms, der in diesem kürzen aber intensiven Zeitraum in Lichtenberg entstanden ist, die Öffentlichkeit eingeladen.

Another way to do urban plant research

Two different urban researchers, charmingly named of Field Office, made a video about looking at Berlin plants. It reminds me of how, when I arrive in a new place, I suddenly don’t recognize most of the trees, leaf shapes, anything really except a few international plants like lawn grass and dandelions.

Mooste, Estonia: “Forest, do you have any bears?”

A child of the city, now grown, decided to face her discomfort with the forest. Because this particular forest was a foreign one, where the trees spoke Estonian, Berlin-based artist Nadin Reschke asked local schoolchildren to help her communicate with them. In this video, the children teach her words for talking to trees: words soft as moss.

New Haven: Snowdrops and Gardenclips

I was already planning to celebrate the recent appearance of this year’s first snowdrops with a post of some sort. Then I found out that my friend Eric Larson, manager of Yale’s Marsh Botanical Garden, introduces this little white early bird of a flower in the latest video he’s hosted for an internet project called GardenClips.

Artist duo Iris-a-Maz invite us all to their new video installation, Ultra Plants, opening tonight, May 11, in Hamburg. As fellow artistic investigators of urban plants who have contributed insights and images to Urban Plant Research in the past, Iris-a-Maz have now turned their attention to so-called weeds.
