Hazelnuts on the street

There are so many Turkish hazelnuts showering down onto Berlin’s streets and sidewalks these days, I just don’t know how I overlooked them before reading Berlin Plants’ informative hazelnut article. Now I see them everywhere!

Angry-looking pansies growing on the sidewalk

Growing wild on the sidewalks of Adlershof, these sour-faced pansies were photographed by long-time Urban Plants reader Marko, who posted them on Flickr with the caption “My, are we angry!” It seems to be rogue pansy season in Berlin, as we spotted more frowning flowers here in Friedrichshain…

What is a Lavender Scavenger, besides a bad name for an indie band or a misguided cocktail idea? Well, it describes the person doing some urban foraging on Karl-Marx-Allee, while I was enjoying a sparkling rhubarb juice on the front terrace of Café Tasso

Stills from Flip Flop by Anke

Yesterday was an eventful day for Urban Plant Research in Berlin. I had a visit in the studio with Anke from the artistic-botanic small press Beton + Garten Verlag, which is working with us on our first Urban Plant Research book.

Photo by Anke of Leslie in the community garden

Unlike Phyllis, I don’t have a backyard to garden in, but I am a member of a young community garden, Bürgergarten Laskerwiese. Anke recently photographed me weeding my vegetable bed there, 10 square meters (90 square feet) which I share with Marko. This photo doesn’t really capture the vividness of the scene – it was a dark, overcast day, so even at 2 in the afternoon, the light was scant. But I wanted to record these plants anyway.

Juncker's Hotel Garni

18 July 2008 (observed) / 9 September 2008 (photographed)
Grünbergerstraße 21, Friedrichshain, Berlin

This is a small hotel I always enjoy walking past. To think of a hotel owner taking the time to cultivate such bodacious balconies makes me happy.
