At 5pm today, artist ATAK is introducing his new book, Der Garten, 32 pages of his paintings about the garden. “The garden breathes time and time breathes as a garden. I go to the garden in the evenings to breathe,” he says.
After a much-too-long period of silence – during which I’ve been focused primarily on music – I am happy to share my newest solo work which has swung back into the realm of Urban Plant Research: an installation made from recycled Christmas trees!
I hope those of our readers in New York City will consider joining me at the opening of my show Needle Bed this evening from 7-9pm at Open Source Gallery in South Slope, Brooklyn. Despite the ridiculously freezing temperature outside, it will be festive!

local ecologist is a super-knowledgable urban ecology blog in New York, with whom Urban Plant Research has long been exchanging ideas and comments, and whom we are long overdue in recommending. From lovely photos and accurate IDs of local fruits and foliage (as in the picture above, of hawthorn) to investigations of urban space and architecture, local ecologist reports on a wide variety of subjects and is packed with in-depth information.
Artist duo Iris-a-Maz invite us all to their new video installation, Ultra Plants, opening tonight, May 11, in Hamburg. As fellow artistic investigators of urban plants who have contributed insights and images to Urban Plant Research in the past, Iris-a-Maz have now turned their attention to so-called weeds.
Our favorite zine, Balkon & Garten, is celebrating its 50th issue – with silver stickers and sparkling stars. Urban Plant Research hereby extends its warmest congratulations to B&G on eight years of lovely images, texts, design and dialogue on humans’ relationship to nature, in Berlin and elsewhere.
Do you know our favorite urban plant magazine, Balkon & Garten? It’s an independent, small-press ‘zine here in Berlin, with art, prose and poetry contributed by readers from all over the world. Both Sara and I are regular readers and contributors. It’s been awhile since we’ve mentioned this great publication, so I’m giving you this peek at the brand new issue.
