Artist duo Iris-a-Maz invite us all to their new video installation, Ultra Plants, opening tonight, May 11, in Hamburg. As fellow artistic investigators of urban plants who have contributed insights and images to Urban Plant Research in the past, Iris-a-Maz have now turned their attention to so-called weeds.
In the exhibition announcement, the artists point out that the idea of classifying plants as ‘useful plants’ and ‘weeds’ is a relatively recent concept, which artificially demotes ‘weeds’ to a lower status than other plants and beings. In their installation, viewers will confront weeds as thinking, seeing equals. We wish we could be there, and hope that our Hamburg-area readers will drop by with our best wishes.
