These two urban houseplants have very unusual pots. The photograph, entitled “pisspots,” was taken by Alana Mandel in Holy Cross Hall at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. Read on for the logical explanation behind this situation…
Alana’s explanation is simple. She says that while the room you see here is now the women’s bathroom, it contains both urinals and showers. Rumor has it that the building was formerly a boys’ dormitory, she explains.
What better way to transform two urinals into a simple wall element befitting a ladies’ room than to scrub them shiny clean and plant a healthy green plant in each? The plants seem to be thriving in their porcelain surroundings. Perhaps Marcel Duchamp could have titled his infamous, censored sculpture Planter instead of Fountain?
If he had freshened it up with a houseplant, who would have refused to exhibit it? Not me!
