Sagres, PT: Street tree management

What are these?

They’re fruit from the street trees in the small surf town of Sagres, at the very southwesternmost tip of Portugal, from palm trees, to be exact.

They make a mess if not cut down in a bunch – I saw a woman busily sweeping up fallen fruit. I wonder if these cut ones can be used for food or oil?
