Next door to the bookstore is a very crisply and minimalist-chicly designed bar. Apparently once the Czech national airline’s East Berlin ticket office, restored all in white with, now in summer, fancy geometric seating of tan leather and black basketwork on the wide front step. Plants complete the picture – very, very manicured and contained plants, where the pots, in their large squareness, are almost more important than the plants themselves – are architectural elements. The building entrances to the right and left are also decorated with docile, sculpted shrub-things. Even the little areas around the trees between parking spaces have been carefully planted. With permission from the city? Without? Interesting, the act of delineating your space in public space and customizing it and making it your own.
