How many different succulents can you count in this picture? I tried to count them all and lost track. This incredible garden, which Sara and I saw as we visited a rustic little beach by Half Moon Bay on New Year’s Eve, is clearly the product of human intervention. I highly doubt any natural seaside cliff would be so diversely and densely populated.
Indeed, the stewards of this garden must be artists, as it is part of a group artist studio building with a very provocative exterior, which I can only describe as “only in California.”
Though it’s really not my style, I do have to admire this structure for fitting right in with the charismatically spiky and brooding tree to its left.
The larger part of my admiration, however, goes to the garden. Someone must have a very good instinct for what plants would be happy in the cool, moist salt air and in such tight quarters. Each of the plants in this picture looks healthy and radiant.

Thanks to my sister and UPR contributor Phoebe for taking us to this great spot!

super writeup! lovely to see my “secret beach” through your eyes.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it and really glad you took us to this place. I have some more cool pictures but they aren’t really plant related…
